How fonts for Discord work
Discord has no font picker for names or messages. You can still change how your name looks by pasting Unicode characters that resemble bold, Gothic, script, or small caps lettering. This page generates every style at once, so you can compare them before pasting.
Generation happens entirely in your browser. Your text is not sent anywhere until you paste it into Discord.
Where Discord fonts work
| Discord field | Unicode fonts | Discord markdown |
|---|---|---|
| Username | No (lowercase letters, numbers, _ and . only) |
No |
| Display name | Yes | No |
| Server nickname | Yes, per server | No |
| About Me | Yes | Yes, in our testing |
| Messages | Yes | Yes |
| Server and channel names | Some characters; may be restricted | No |
Unicode fonts vs. Discord markdown
Discord messages support native markdown. It is real formatting, so it is easier for screen readers and search than Unicode fonts:
| Effect | Markdown | Where it works |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | **text** |
Messages |
| Italic | *text* or _text_ |
Messages |
| Strikethrough | ~~text~~ |
Messages |
| Inline code | `text` |
Messages |
Use markdown in messages and Unicode fonts where markdown does not render: display names and server nicknames. The full list of formatting codes, including spoilers, headers, and lists, is in our Discord text formatting guide.

Why Discord fonts sometimes show as boxes
Discord displays text with the fonts available on each viewerโs device. A character missing from those fonts appears as an empty box, called tofu. Bold, italic, script, and Fraktur letters display on most current systems. Decorative symbols and newer characters fail more often, particularly on older devices.
Server rules and moderation
Many servers restrict names that are hard to read, mention, or moderate. Some use bots that reset nicknames containing unusual characters or zalgo. Check a serverโs rules before styling your nickname there.
Accessibility note
Screen readers may announce each styled letter with its Unicode name or skip it, so a styled name can be unreadable to blind members. Others may also struggle to type or mention a name they cannot read. Keep part of your name plain, and use Discordโs markdown rather than Unicode fonts for emphasis inside messages.
