What the italic text generator does
The italic text generator replaces each letter with its italic counterpart from Unicode’s Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols. The result leans to the right like italic type and keeps that look when you paste it into apps that do not support formatting.
Available italic variants:
| Style | Example | Includes digits? |
|---|---|---|
| Italic serif | 𝐼𝑡𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑐 𝑡𝑒𝑥𝑡 | No |
| Bold italic serif | 𝑰𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒄 𝒕𝒆𝒙𝒕 | No |
| Sans-serif italic | 𝘐𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘵𝘦𝘹𝘵 | No |
| Sans-serif bold italic | 𝙄𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙘 𝙩𝙚𝙭𝙩 | No |
Need more weight? Try the bold text generator. Want joined, handwritten letters? Use the cursive font generator.
How to make italic text
- Type or paste your text into the input box at the top.
- Scroll to the italic styles. They update as you type.
- Tap Copy next to the italic version you like.
- Paste it into your bio, caption, comment, display name, or message.
- Preview it before saving to confirm every letter displays.
Italics work well for quotes, book or song titles, and a single word of emphasis.
Where italic Unicode works
| Platform | Unicode italics work in | Native italic in messages |
|---|---|---|
| Name, Bio, captions, comments | No | |
| TikTok | Name, Bio, captions, comments | No |
| Discord | Display name, nickname, About Me, messages | *text* or _text_ |
| Chats, status, About, profile name | _text_ |
Usernames and handles on these platforms are restricted to a small set of plain characters, so styled text is rejected there. For Discord-specific options, including nicknames, see fonts for Discord.
Why italic letters may show as boxes
Each italic letter is a separate Unicode character, not a font setting. The reader’s device needs a font that contains it. Current versions of major operating systems include such fonts, but these setups may show empty boxes, called tofu:
- Older Android or iOS versions.
- Outdated desktop systems or browsers.
- Apps that draw text with a small custom font.
One known quirk: Unicode reserves the slot for italic small h, so the generator uses the Planck constant ℎ instead. In a few fonts, that one letter may look slightly different.
When to use italics
Italics signal a change of voice rather than volume. Common uses in social posts:
- A quote or lyric inside a caption.
- The title of a song, film, or book.
- A single word you want readers to stress.
- A soft sign-off at the end of a bio.
If you want the text to shout, bold is the better choice. If you want it to look handwritten, use cursive.
Limits of Unicode italics
- No italic digits exist, so numbers stay upright.
- In-app search may not match italic letters to the plain spelling.
- Some apps count each italic letter as two characters toward length limits.
- Copying italic text into a document keeps it as math symbols, not formatted italics.
Accessibility note
Screen readers usually do not read italic Unicode as words. They may name each character, such as mathematical italic small t, or skip it. Keep italic Unicode short, use native formatting in Discord and WhatsApp messages where possible, and keep names, links, and essential information in plain text.
