How YouTube fonts work
YouTube shows channel names, titles, and comments in its own font, and there is no setting to change it. Unicode, the text standard used by every device, includes alphabets of letters that already look bold, cursive, or small caps. Paste them into YouTube and they keep their look.
This page converts your text into every style at once, in your browser, without sending it anywhere.
Where styled text works on YouTube
| Place | Styled Unicode text | Native formatting |
|---|---|---|
| Channel name | Yes | No |
| Handle (@name) | No | No |
| Video title | Yes, sparingly (100-character limit) | No |
| Video description | Yes (5,000-character limit) | Bold, italic, and strikethrough options in the editor |
| Comments | Yes | *bold*, _italic_, -strikethrough- |
| Community posts | Yes | Varies |
Limits are from YouTube Help and may change.
How to use a YouTube font
- Type your text in the box at the top of this page.
- Tap Copy next to the style you like.
- For a channel name, open YouTube Studio and go to Customization, then Basic info. For a title or description, open the videoโs details.
- Paste, check the preview, and save.
Because YouTube limits channel name changes to twice in 14 days, try your styled name in a comment draft or a note app first.

Titles, search, and clickbait
YouTube search matches the plain words in titles and descriptions. A keyword written in a Unicode font is a different string of characters, so it may not match what viewers type. YouTubeโs spam policies also prohibit misleading titles and thumbnails meant to trick viewers. Use styled text as decoration, keep searchable words plain, and make sure the title describes the video.
Why some YouTube fonts show as boxes
The viewerโs device draws the text. If it lacks a font with the character, it shows an empty box. Phones and computers updated in the last few years handle bold, cursive, and small caps letters well; older TVs and set-top boxes are less predictable. See why fancy text shows as boxes for the details.
Accessibility note
Screen readers may spell out styled letters by their Unicode names or skip them, which can make a channel name or title impossible to understand. Keep at least part of your channel name in plain text, and use YouTubeโs native comment formatting for emphasis. More in fancy fonts and accessibility.
