How Telegram fonts work
Telegram has two ways to change how text looks. Inside messages it has real formatting such as bold and italic. Everywhere else, including your name, bio, and channel titles, it shows plain text in its own font. Pasting Unicode characters that already look styled is how you get bold or cursive letters into those fields.
This page converts your text into every style at once, entirely in your browser.
Where styled text works on Telegram
| Place | Styled Unicode text | Native formatting |
|---|---|---|
| First and last name | Yes | No |
| Username | No (aโz, 0โ9, _, 5โ32 characters) |
No |
| Bio | Yes (70 limit, 140 with Premium) | No |
| Group and channel titles | Yes | No |
| Messages and captions | Yes | Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, monospace, quote, spoiler |
Telegramโs native formatting
For messages, native formatting is the better choice. It is real formatting, so search and screen readers read the words normally.
| Effect | How to apply |
|---|---|
| Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, monospace | Select text while typing and pick a format from the menu |
| Spoiler | Select text and choose Spoiler; readers tap to reveal it |
| Quote | Select text and choose the quote format |
Bots use a separate markup syntax described in Telegramโs Bot API, which does not always match what you can type in the app. Telegram Premium also offers a richer editor with headings, lists, and tables.

Why some Telegram fonts show as boxes
Telegram draws text with the fonts installed on each viewerโs device. A missing character appears as an empty box. Bold, cursive, and monospace letters display on current systems, while decorative symbols fail more often on older phones. More in why fancy text shows as boxes.
Accessibility note
Screen readers may read styled letters by their technical names, which makes a styled name or channel title hard to understand. Use Telegramโs native formatting inside messages, and keep part of your name in plain text. See fancy fonts and accessibility.
