How to Write a Cursive Capital I
Cursive capital I starts at or below the middle of the letter and loops up and to the left in a large counterclockwise curve. The stroke then comes down to the baseline and curls back to the left. It does not look like a printed I.
How to Write a Lowercase Cursive i
Lowercase cursive i is a short upstroke, a short downstroke, and an exit tail. Add the dot after you finish the whole word, so the pen does not leave the paper in the middle of it.
Common Mistakes with Cursive I
Forgetting the dot, or dotting before the word is finished, is the usual problem. Without a dot, a cursive i looks like the start of a u or an e.
These notes describe common American school cursive. Handwriting programs differ in small details, so follow your teacher's model if it looks different.
Cursive I in Unicode
ℐ (U+2110) comes from the older Letterlike Symbols block (U+2100–U+214F), not from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block like the other variants. Unicode had already encoded this character before 2001, so the math block leaves a reserved gap at that spot. Because a different part of the font draws it, it can look slightly different in weight or slant from the rest of a cursive word on some devices.
